Finally & proudly now a local distributor for Slingshot, the independent, radical & free quarterly newspaper from the East Bay in California. In operation since 1988, the newspaper is still created with a hand-done layout method by the Slingshot Collective, a loose group of volunteer members. Slingshot is also well-known for the pocket calendar called The Organizer they come out with every year since 1995. Slingshot issues will be available while supplies last for free at Lump in Raleigh and at Attic 506.

Zine Making workshop/ Duke Create at Rubinstein Arts Center
I will be teaching a Zine Making Workshop on Saturday, November 23, 2-4pm in conjunction with Duke Create. Free for Duke students & staff, it will take place in the Makerspace at the Rubinstein Arts Center.
In the course, we will look at a collection of zines from the past & present and then create a zine together, which will be available for pick up at a later date.

Healing Garden at Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Staten Island
On Saturday, July 13, 2-4pm we will set up some thematic publications for the exhibit ‘Healing Garden’ at Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island.
“Healing Garden explores living-memory of a botanical garden located within isolated megacity proximity. It features artist contributions examining the dynamics of urban sustainability and its metaphoric relationship to the human condition. This group exhibition features the work of Remedies Universe (Sasha Huber & Petri Saarikko) and Aukea Collective (Eveliina Hämäläinen & Petri Saarikko), international artists based in Helsinki, Finland and The Concern (Orvokki Crosby) contributing with thematic publications during the opening.”

We are now taking submissions for The Concern. A Magazine, issue 2, which will be published this fall. Unlike issue 1, which was entirely black and white, xerox printed, this 2nd issue will allow for color pages, but still printed with a DIY touch. We are looking for submissions that relate to being concerned about something, it could be anything. It could take the form of writing (poetry, articles, short stories) or artwork (drawing, collage, video stills, photography, etc). Though we can’t say we will accept all submissions, as a curated bookstore, this magazine will also be a curated collection. Please submit something to theconcernnewsstand (a) gmail, by September 15. SEEK Raleigh- Dorothea Dix Park- June 1
We will take part in SEEK Raleigh on Saturday, June 1, 3-8pm at Dorothea Dix Park. Our location will be a container on Blair Drive within the park.
SEEK Raleigh is a temporary public art program that engages artists to use unique, non-traditional interiors, structures, and outdoor spaces for site-specific, performative, and participatory installations and experiences. These temporary, experimental projects are designed to introduce the public to new, diverse, and thought-provoking experiences as well as create opportunities for artists to extend their creative practice. Through these experiences, both the artist and the community will find novel ways to learn and share the stories of our City.
Richmond Book Art Fair, April 19-20, 2019
We will take part in the Richmond Book Art Fair at Studio Two Three on Friday, April 19 (ticketed preview) 7-10pm and for the main event Saturday, April 20, 10-5pm.
"The Richmond Book Art Fair culminates in a day-long fair featuring artists’ book makers, zine makers, and independent publishers. The theme of the 2019 Richmond Book Art Fair is Power of the Press, highlighting the power of the book, printing and publishing to tell previously untold narratives and highlight marginalized voices in our community. The role of the press is at the forefront of our civic dialogue, and this event empowers community members to harness the power of the press and highlight the capacity of individual citizens to create and process media."

Lump’s first fundraising benefit, titled LUMP SUM, will occur Friday, April 5, from 6-9. The benefit includes a silent auction of over 72 original artworks, performances by Crowmeat Bob, Dan Melchior, and Jasmyn Milan, a memory capturing installation by Mollie Earls. Moon By Moon Apothecary (Chanelle A. Bergeron) will be providing herbal tonics and elixirs. The first issue of the Blount Force Magazine will be released as well! All this while DJ Gallimaufry helps guide us through the evening’s events.
Comics Life Event, Greensboro, NC
Took part in the 1st Annual Comics Life Event in Greensboro, NC this past weekend. It took place at WAM Rev Gallery at the historic Revolution Mill, a former textile mill building. I was also part of a panel discussion “Stepping Into the World of Zines and Memoir” with Critic Rob Clough.

A hallway show by Brenda Goldstein (Durham) showing a series that explores her relation to space, color and light rendered in architectonic lines and curves in acrylic pencil & crayon.
Sourcing imagery from production sets, kitsch crafts, and prop designs, April Childers will present new paintings and sculptures in a show titled ‘Precious Moment’ at ‘My Room,’ Amanda Barr’s rotating exhibition space. Combining the principle of the carrot and the stick with gentle notions of instructional painting, mouse excrement and chintzy object references, the exhibition will be displayed as a ‘looping still’, taken from a narrative cycle involving authority and the rumination of it.
The Concern Newsstand run by Orvokki Crosby (Chapel Hill) open with new artist publications in store, plus video with original music by Clark Blomquist (Carrboro) of Tegucigalpan on display and a new publication by him called ‘Instant Ham’.
The debut of Jerstin Crosby (Chapel Hill) sharing a studio with Vanessa Murray (Carrboro). Jerstin will be showing his current work with sculpture, as well as video art by David Colagiovanni (Athen, OH) from Jerstin’s long running cable access video art show, Acid Rain. Vanessa will be showing painting & mixed media work from the past & present.
Lindsay Metivier (Carrboro) will have her photo studio open. In her space will also be a table ocomix collective The Weakly Group founders Max Huffman (Carrboro) & Andrew Alexander (NY). They will be selling comics, zines, prints & stickers.

Artist Jason S. Wright created artwork, titled ‘I am here for you’, for a 22.5” x 28” newsprint poster which will be shipping free with web orders & free with all purchases made at our back room bookstore at Lump Gallery in Raleigh and at our Chapel Hill showroom.
Jason S. Wright is currently based in Richmond, VA and shows his drawings & art works internationally. He is prolific in zine/ book producing & in one of a kind shirts with his writings & illustration. He is a founder of Udli Editions, producing such sellables, based in Boone, NC. We have several of his publications in store, including Heads Magazine 6, Heads Magazine 4, a book of drawings Angels Forever and a book of photographs, Scar Lover in a Red Halter.
The Concern Newsstand at the new Durham Food Hall
Excited to announce that The Concern Newsstand will have a magazine rack at the new Durham Food Hall opening in March 2019. Located at the Liberty Warehouse on Foster Street in the Central Park district near downtown, the food hall will be:
“An incubator for local culinary talent, DFH provides a space for chefs to experiment and collaborate. Small menus focus on high-quality dishes and the freshest ingredients in a casual setting (and a casual price point!).
A centralized bar offers craft cocktails, beer from local brewers, and hand-selected wines from DFH Beverage Director Brad Farran. This central bar, The Auctioneer Bar, is surrounded by lots of communal seating that creates a friendly, inclusive atmosphere where everyone is welcome.”

Featuring:
Body Wash, a mixed media show by artists Amanda Barr and Jerstin Crosby based on re-conditioning after conditions have changed. Examining the old body and experimenting with failure and what essence means after body wash. The show will take place in Amanda Barr's space My Room and in the hallways.
The Concern Newsstand (www.theconcernnewsstand.com) a publications project run by Orvokki Crosby: come take a look at art books, limited edition books by local and not-so-local artists, zines & hard to find magazines. The space will be open for events and by appointment.
Photographer, educator & curator Lindsay Metivier will open her studio for the evening, with 1000s of prints for sale! Also, in her space for the evening, Dress Kit, run by Amethyst White, is a vintage pop up shop specializing in affordable 40’s-90’s femme wear for all bodies. Amethyst White also carries kitsch and curated accessories for the vintage devotee.
Ben Hamburger (www.benhamburgerart.com) will open his active painting studio to the public to show new and in-progress figurative as well as mixed media installations.
Also, featuring music by Crumb Catcher acoustic and dj set by Kosmonauta on the roof (weather permitting).
Paul McMahon: It Takes a While to Figure Out Who You Really Are- at Lump Gallery

Lump is proud to present painting, sculpture, video and a performance by Paul McMahon. The exhibition will open Friday, November 30, 6 - 9pm. An Artist Reception and performance by McMahon will occur Friday, December 7, 6 - 9pm.
In 1982 Paul McMahon (b. 1950) and Nancy Chunn created 10 large paintings. McMahon and Chunn refer to these works as SONG PAINTINGS. Each painting is a very literal illustration of its song. These paintings were originally intended to be backdrops for McMahon’s performance of these songs. They were used for that purpose only once, at Artists Space in New York City in May of 1982. The two main subjects are vicious art world gossip and cute little songs about animals.
Accompanying the mass installation of these paintings, Lump will present a multitude of video, 2-D work and sculpture that trace the various incarnations of McMahon’s career through the years to present day. McMahon (cat toy enthusiast) has performed as a giant potato, administered advice as a rock n’ roll therapist and has been banned from public access television for showing a human anus. He is a Pictures Generation artist and works as a mailman on Saturdays.
Paul McMahon lives and works in Woodstock, NY where he runs an artist bed and breakfast called the Mothership.

Jamie’s work includes encaustic painting, mixed media collage, oil & cold wax and will be shown in Amanda Barr’s space ‘My Room.’ Also open, will be The Concern’s showroom & Lindsay Metivier’s photo studio.

Artist Studios over Local 506- opening November 9
We are excited to announce the opening of our showroom/ reading room/ workshop in Chapel Hill, on the 2nd floor at 506A W. Franklin Street. The hallway of studios, shared with photographer Lindsay Metivier, painter Ben Hamburger and artist & owner of Bowbarr Amanda Barr, will open on Friday, November 9, 6-9pm during the second Friday art walk in Chapel Hill. Amanda Barr will be opening up her space to the drawings of Bill Thelen & Conner Calhoun, in her revolving gallery/ studio ‘My Room.’ The Concern Newsstand’s space will be open during events, like the second Fridays and by appointment.
